Well, every wedding I shoot is personal, no doubt about it. But Jane and Alex’s wedding day resonated with me, for a simple reason.

Edie and Milly. Two beautiful girls. Edie is… so fantastically self contained. So imaginative. So filled with love, laughter. Cheeky as all get out. Milly – well, she is just a tiny baby. Her needs and wants are sometimes too much for her chubby little body to contain. Her inquisitiveness is boundless. Her eyes… always filled with wonder.

Sure, this was their wedding day. Family and friends were there. There were speeches. Ceremonies. All the stuff.

But the whole day, it felt like… like Jane and Alex were planning a big out out. With the kids. Had to keep them busy. Set aside times for feeding. Pack their bags, keep them happy. I know these things so well.

It wasn’t that the day was about the kids, not at all. It was just… well, you can’t put your own children aside for a day to do something. It doesn’t work like that. They will be there, and when you are a parent, it’s the children you are thinking about, not yourselves.

Even on your wedding day. That’s how it is.

This is Jane and Alex’s wedding day. Edie and Milly were a big part of it. This is a story about the four of them.

Getting up the mountain was the tricky bit.

It was a pretty simple day. Get married. Go for a stroll. Take some pictures.

Their celebrant was Father Terry Keane. Lovely old bloke. Hasn’t changed a bit, as far as I could tell.

He looks exactly the same as when he conducted another wedding, fourteen years ago. My wife and I, in fact. Pretty good omen, I reckon.

But that wouldn’t be right. It would kind of dismiss the effort and thought that was put in. It wasn’t about scale.

It was about intimacy. It was about making everyone there feel involved. About inclusiveness. It was celebratory, yeah – but deeply personal.

I guess it should have been kind of a high pressure day for me. You know – shooting friends who are also wedding photographers. It never felt like that. It felt like I was a guest. With a camera. Charged with capturing the day for them.

This is Marieke and Luke’s wedding. Epic? Maybe. Amazing? Sure. Beautiful? No doubt.

Wonderful?

It was that kind of a day.

I got a lot from both. Composition, exposure, only shoot vertical when it is of benefit to the image, whole bunch of practical stuff. That was the second semester.

He would have hated this image. It’s vertical. The focus isn’t on their faces. I can hear him asking – if it’s supposed to be a portrait why are their eyes shut?

My first teacher started me on the path of looking for the light. Capturing the feeling.

I think he would have liked this frame.
