a great big “thank you”!

To all of the beautiful brides to be who came by my booth yesterday at the Melbourne Bridal & Honeymoon Expo, at Jeff’s Shed!

Wow! What an amazing day it was! I was absolutely rushed off my feet from go to whoa – so I am really sorry if I didn’t have time to say “Hi” to you personally if you came by.

I was really thrilled by the number of brides who took the time to really have a good look at my work, and the number of people who had lovely things to say about the albums and work on display was truly heartwarming.

I was also pretty happy with how my backdrop looked – I spent literally weeks trying to pick images that showed what I am all about in a glance. These are the shots I chose in the end – as they looked at the expo.

elysse & shannon – oh what a beautiful day!

Yep. What a day. What a couple. What amazing light. What fantastic weather. What beautiful, happy people. Elysse and Shannon were always going to be great to photograph, but really, I had no idea how much fun it was going to be – in the stressful, full on way that shooting a wedding is fun, that is! They are a wonderfully relaxed couple, but still had plenty of time for the little details – like the flowers. Love ‘em!

Simple dress. Elegant. Perfect fit. I knew Elysse would look fantastic as soon as I saw it.

And she did. I love this image, too – I love the moments immediately after a bride puts on he dress, on her ACTUAL WEDDING DAY, for the first time. Beautiful. Moving. Nervous. Happy.

Like this too, albeit a bit of a traditional, cheesy wedding shot – I do take them too!

So I headed off to the church – St James in Brighton. Now, of course the groom is pretty much essential on any given wedding day – but look at these flowergirls! Too beautiful.

But, hey – here’s Shannon. As ever, the stolen moments make the best images.

I love these moments – the pauses between the formal events, the waiting, the anticipation…

And here comes the bride. The difference between shooting Elysse at her parents’ house, and outside the church is amazing. The sense of occasion is palpable. I love that.

As a wedding photographer, you have to always, always be ready to shoot, to best capture the events and emotions. Even if, say,
one little flowergirl jumps the gun, gets halfway down the aisle and realises that somebody is missing…

Right then. THAT”S more like it!

Nice moment, this…

And this…

Oh, and this…

This was a happy moment. Mind, you, Shannon dropped the ring!

And this was the shot that, when Elysse and Shannon saw it blown up, made them both go “Ahhh… ” together. I believe I have mentioned that I love my job. You don’t get that sort of reaction from a catalogue shoot!

Priest and celebrants are often surprised when I indicate that I don’t want to do a posed signing of the register shot, after it has been signed. This is why I don’t…

Hey! Married! Happy! Excited! Beautiful!

And… BUBBLES!

I think I may have raved a bit on the day – about how much I loved the light. How amazing they looked together. How it was one of those days when the wind always seemed to blow at JUST the right moment…

How I could let just a teensy bit of flare into the image whenever I wanted…

Or even a big fat dollop of flare – hey, the 70s are cool again!

And capturing perfectly intimate images of completely in love couples will always be cool.

Hey, one of these pix would have been sufficient, but this was definitely my favourite series of the day!

I mentioned at the start how much attention was paid to the little details. I really, really dug the table decorations.

And I love how the crowd reacted to their entrance…

I could have left happy after this shot, to be honest – it says everything you could want.

But hey – always time for one more snap!

Elysse and Shannon – Congrats! I had a ball shooting your day!

EDIT: Almost forgot! One of my favourite ever wedding moments – you can tell from the images what a relaxed, together and completely FUN priest Father Peter is. Well – while I was crouching down between the pews, waiting for Elysse to walk down the aisle, swinging round to shoot Shannon, Father Peter was welcoming the guests and making introductions. As he did so, he walked down the aisle to where I was crouched. He laid his hand on my shoulder and said to the crowd…

“I do love to see people kneeling in church”.

Nice.

Winnie - Congrats to you both.I can see you are both very happy together.
May there always be plenty of love in your marriage
Happy Married Life

Elysse - Darin,

This looks fantastic. It was such a pleasure to have you there on our wedding day. The photos are amazing and so many people have commented on what a fantastic photographer you are. You made us both feel relaxed and Shannon and I couldn’t be happier with our photos and how you captured the day. We will always cherish these images, as they refelect the true love we have for each other now and forever.

Thanks again

Elysse and Shannon.

ava brings scruffy home again…

This is written by Ava. It is about her adventures with Scruffy – who is an extraordinarily well loved stuffed toy, that is given out to Ava’s class on a ballot basis. I haven’t edited her writing at all – except to shrink the font a wee bit. Well, a lot, actually – Ava is a big fan of REALLY BIG LETTERS. And the title should be pink – but you get the gist. Oh – and what she says about missing swimming ‘cos I got the time wrong? Not my fault. Coulda happened to anyone.

Also – Ava is just barely seven. She is also fantastic.

That’s Scruffy. Can you see why he is so loved?

This is what Ava had to say:

Scruffy coming to my house!!!

I was stunned when I heard my name come out of the lucky ticket box for Scruffy.

I am sure I nearly fainted. Really I mean what I just said.

I got a real surprise because I was scooting home on my scooter with Scruffy’s bag on it while Poppy and Dad were riding on their bikes home.

Scruffy loved the ride he also said this, that it was so relaxing, that he enjoyed a lot and that he had never been on a scooter ride before that, really pleased me.
I knew from the moment I took scruffy home that Scruffy and I would have a great time together.

When we got home I sorted out my bedside table then with Scruffy watching and listening I practiced reading ‘The Peasant Prince’ with fluency and expression once I had practiced it I put it in my bag.

Then I started writing the introduction about Scruffy and me. What I am reading, is what I am talking to you about.

It was a miracle to get Scruffy for the third time I was pleading to let myself have Scruffy for the third time YIPPEE my plead came true!

The next day I went to school I took Scruffy to have some cuddles with him on the way.

In the afternoon while we were singing Christmas carols the bell went without Mrs. Frost hearing it!

When we got home I had to go straight to swimming lessons. I had to leave Scruffy in the car, which meant that Scruffy got to watch YIPPEE.

Dad thought it was three thirty when it was three O’clock what a pity no lessons for me. But that means I get to do some of my blog, with Scruffy. He was amazed when he found out I had a blog.

I’ll tell you why, because I really wanted something just about me so Mum set me up she showed me how to do everything.

So that’s the adventures of Scruffy and I.

Sophia Lagastes - Delightful little post by my dear sweet girl. What a ray of sunshine! Thanks Darin for posting a lovely shot of my schoolgirl. xx

a quick note about URLs.

As a photographer, I am a geek by default. Sooo… I finally discovered the way to display a URL of individual posts that reflects the contents of that post – rather than just a random string. This means any clients who have been sent a link for your own wedding/portrait/event post – it’s not gonna work no more.

Sorry.

You will find it from here – look in the right category from the menu, check the tag cloud in the footer, do a search. It’s there somewhere.

And when you find it, take a second to enjoy the newfound elegance of the URL in the menu bar of your browser.

What’s that you’re saying, Sophia? No-one cares but me? Say it ain’t so!

This post was brought to you courtesy of the Society in Favour of Wearing Fairy Tutus while Scooting.

clare & david got married.

Clare and David did get married. They got hitched at Trinity College at Melbourne Uni, which is a simple spectacular church, outside and in. It was a glorious day, they both looked beautiful, all their family and friends were well dressed and happy… Have I mentioned that I love my job?

Meet Clare. She is completely happy – just look at that smile! And pretty nervous – check out her hands. She wore such a simple, elegant dress – it suited her perfectly.

It probably helps that she has such fantastic eyes!

This was my favourite shot from this bit of the day – just a little pause, a moment of reflection before going out to face the day…

Clare, her family and a bunch of friends got ready at a stylish little hotel in the heart of Brunswick – I really liked the tiles, and the doorway.

This is Trinity – told you it was cool.

And this is David. He’s pretty cool too – but I reckon you can see the nerves in the line of his shoulders and his slightly furrowed brow…

No worries though – she turned up.

And made her entrance…

Really enjoyed the interior. There were raised pews either side of the area where Clare and David stood to conduct the service – which meant a great view for their family, and some great images for me!

Love this moment…

Oh – did I mention the choir? They really lent some atmosphere to the proceedings.

Neither of the wanted to shoot a whole heap of formals – which is totally normal for my wedding clients – so we just took a few snaps in the immediate surrounds. This was a nice moment – I really enjoyed shooting around the old buildings –

These were hands down my favourite shots from the portraits. I loved the light, the bit of flare coming through, but mostly just how beautifully happy they look together.

But this is my favourite shot from the day – it just works for me.

We went off to Enoteca Vino Bar, Carlton North for the reception. Really beautiful place, great staff – and I give them mucho kudos for the table numbers – so much nicer than a laminated number on a chromed pole!

Clare and David did the sensible thing – which is to say drink, chat and laugh with their friends and family!

I love this image of Clare – she is giving her guests her full attention. But – look at the hands. Wedding rings always take a little while to get used to…

Not just nicely laid tables – really BIG ONES! Love it.

Eat. Drink. Be merry. And happy ever after…

darin - Thanks Mike – I’m glad that the relaxed vibe comes through. I think it is important for couples to actually enjoy their wedding day!

Mike - This looked like such a cool wedding! It helps that the couple’s stunning, but they’re obviously pretty relaxed and hip too.

Some amazing shots here.

kathy, lee & taidgh. together, forever.

Well, people talk about “dropping right of the map”, but in this case it was literal!

Kathy and Lee tied the knot in Powelltown. Apologies to anyone living there who is reading this, but I had never heard of. Nor had anyone I know. Nonetheless, it is a great little country town – OFF THE MELWAYS! And out of phone reception. And I wasn’t sure I was going to get there – so I just followed Kathy’s directions. Which were basically drive until you see the pub, then ask a local. So I did. And it worked!

In any case, I had a fantastic day. Kathy had put so much work into organising her day, and it really showed. There was a truly local feel to it all – partly because of the location, but largely just because it was obvious that everyone who was there was important to Kathy and Lee, and very happy for them.

Like her mum. She bought a new hat for the day. Can you tell?

Shooting bridal preparations is always one of my favourite times – apart from the feeling of being in the inner sanctum, as it were, there is the opportunity to experience what goes through the mind of a bride on her wedding day. Hence, I really love this shot. To me, it conveys “I’m getting married today” way more effectively than any set up portrait could.

And this conveys “I am a slightly shy, but really cheeky little monkey” pretty well!

Where would we be without flowergirls?

Kathy was very keen for me to shoot the boys, out in Powelltown, hanging out in this fantastic little wooden house, with the coolest, cluttered, comfortable deck. This is Lee. Looking sharp…

This is Taidgh. And this is a beautiful moment…

And this shot shows exactly what I was trying to say about the deck.

This is one of my favourite pix from the day. Obviously it is a set up, but I love the fact that it looks like it could have been shot 80 years ago.

It was only a five minute walk to the church for the boys (and girl – you may have noticed that there was a groomsmaid!). Not everyone walked though. Taidgh RAN!

I love shooting kids on their parents wedding day I also really dig the perfect suit, ENORMOUS buttonhole – and sneakers to complete the ensemble. Taidgh was pretty much the hit of the day!

Obviously, he had pageboy duties to attend to. He is actually jumping the gun here, and had to come back and do it again!

This is a moment that can’t be replicated – the first time a groom sees his bride on their wedding day.

There were a bunch of great moments during their ceremony – here are just a couple…

Time started getting away from us after the ceremony, as the light started to fade. There is always enough time to get some beautiful images though -

I mentioned how much work Kathy put into organising her day. That included preparing all the food. Including this cake. Nice work.

I really enjoyed the table layout – simple garden flowers, in a totally mixed selection of jars. It looked cool…

“Hmm..” thinks Taidgh, “I should be set here. I have a lollipop in one hand, chips in the other. But! I think that little baby has designs on my chips! Nice work, lady – keep her away from me!”

This is cheesy. And perfect. Nice entrance, guys.

Well done. Enjoy!

Alechia Megarry - Well, another tear has been shed as I looked over the photos and re-lived some of the special moments of Kath & Lee’s beautiful wedding… Captured beautifully, well done! Love the photos.

Kath Zenisek - Thanks for the truely lovely photo’s Darrin. You really captured what I imagined when I was planning the wedding. I was really thrilled (and a little teary) at how beautiful all the settings and details and loved ones came up. The wood, the log house, the walk down the dirt road, the cake… superb job Darrin.
